What Is Dev Diwali In Varanasi?
Dev Diwali is the festival of lights of the gods. It is also written as Dev Deepawali. Both spellings mean the same thing.
It is celebrated in Varanasi, which is also called Banaras and Kashi. These are three names for the same city. So Dev Diwali Varanasi, dev diwali banaras and dev diwali Kashi all point to the same festival.
The heart of the festival is simple. After sunset, every one of the ghats of Varanasi is covered in diyas. Volunteers, temple trusts, families and local bodies light them together. The steps turn into rows of small flames that run for several kilometres along the river.
This is not the same as the main Diwali. Regular Diwali is celebrated at home, with lamps on doorways and terraces. Dev Diwali belongs to the river. The lighting is public, it happens on the ghats, and the whole city moves towards the water for it.
Why Is Dev Diwali Celebrated in Varanasi?
There are two beliefs behind the festival, and both are connected to Varanasi.
The first is the story of Tripurasura. The belief is that Lord Shiva defeated the demon Tripurasura on this day. Because of this, the festival is also called Tripurotsav or Tripurari Purnima. Varanasi is considered the city of Shiva. So the victory is marked here more strongly than anywhere else.
The second belief is about the gods themselves. In the tradition of Dev Deepavali, it is said that on this night the gods come down to Earth and bathe in the Ganga at Varanasi. The lamps on the ghats are lit to welcome them. That is where the name comes from. Dev means god. Deepawali means a row of lamps. Together, the meaning is the row of lamps for the gods.
This answers a question many people ask, which is why Dev Diwali is celebrated only in Varanasi. Other cities do observe Kartik Purnima. But the descent of the gods is tied to the Ganga at Kashi in particular. That is why the scale here is different from anywhere else in the country.
The festival is old, and the practice of lamp offering along the river is older still. What has changed in recent decades is the size of the public celebration and the number of visitors who travel for it. On the same day, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the other major temples of the city see some of their heaviest footfall of the year.
When Is Dev Diwali Celebrated On Kartik Purnima?
Dev Diwali always falls on Kartik Purnima. This is the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik, which usually lands in November.
It comes fifteen days after the main Diwali. So if you know the Diwali date for a year, Dev Diwali is roughly two weeks later.
The date moves every year on the English calendar. This is because the Hindu calendar follows the moon, not the sun. A festival fixed to a lunar day will shift across the Gregorian calendar from one year to the next.
This causes real confusion for travellers. People book hotels for Diwali and expect to see the lit ghats, then find out the lighting is two weeks away. If you are planning a trip, check the Kartik Purnima date for that specific year and book around that, not around Diwali.
One more thing to keep in mind. The tithi, or lunar day, does not start and end at midnight. It can begin on one evening and end the next. Local temple committees decide which evening the lighting takes place on. In almost all years this is settled well in advance, but it is worth reconfirming closer to the date.
What Rituals Are Performed On Dev Deepawali?
The visible part of Dev Diwali is the lighting. But the day carries several rituals, and most of them start long before the lamps.
The holy dip. Bathing in the Ganga on Kartik Purnima is considered highly auspicious. Devotees come to the ghats before sunrise for this. The riverfront at four in the morning is quiet and completely different from the evening. Many visitors miss this half of the day.
Deepdaan. This is the offering of lamps. Small diyas are placed on the ghat steps, at temples, and floated on the river. Anyone can take part. Lamps are sold near most ghats through the day.
Temple worship. Kashi Vishwanath and the other major temples see heavy footfall through the day. Queues are much longer than usual.
Ganga Aarti. The evening aarti is performed with more scale than on a normal day. At Dashashwamedh Ghat the aarti is the centre of the evening for most visitors. The Ganga Aarti at Assi Ghat is smaller and easier to get close to.
Charity. Giving food, clothing or money on Kartik Purnima is part of the day for many families. It is a quiet ritual and easy to miss as a visitor, but it is a real part of what the day means.
The point worth holding on to is that this is a religious observance first. The lights are beautiful, but for most of the people around you on the ghats, this is a day of faith. Behaving accordingly makes the evening better for everyone.
When Is Dev Diwali 2026?
Dev Diwali 2026 in Varanasi falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026. This is Kartik Purnima.
The main Diwali in 2026 is roughly two weeks earlier. If someone asks you “dev diwali kab hai?” for this year, the answer is 24 November.
Book early. Hotels near the ghats, boats and cabs all fill up well before the date. In most years, the good boats are gone several weeks out. Rooms with a river view go even earlier.
Also plan your arrival for at least a day ahead. Arriving on the morning of the festival is possible but tight. Trains run late, traffic is heavy from the afternoon, and you will spend your first hours rushing.
Event schedules for the day, including any official programmes and public arrangements, are usually announced by the Varanasi district administration and UP Tourism a few weeks before. Reconfirm those closer to the date, because timings and access points can change from year to year.
If you are travelling from outside the city, it is also the point at which you should book a cab in Varanasi for your arrival and for the festival evening itself.
How Can You Experience Dev Deepawali In Varanasi?
There are three ways to see the festival, and they give you very different evenings.
From a boat on the Ganga. This gives you the full view. You see the ghats one after another as the boat moves, with the lamps and their reflection together. It is the reason most people travel for this festival. It is also the option that needs the earliest booking.
From the ghat steps. You stand or sit among the crowd, close to the lamps and the aarti. The atmosphere is stronger here than on a boat. The view is narrower. Movement is slow and the crowd is dense from early evening.
From a rooftop or a riverside hotel balcony. This is the calm option. You get height and a wide view without the crowd. It works well for families with small children and for older travellers. You lose the closeness to the ritual.
Whichever one you choose, plan the route in advance. Roads near the ghats close to vehicles in the evening. You will walk the last stretch, sometimes for a fair distance, through crowds.
Practical points for the evening:
- Reach your ghat or boarding point earlier than you think you need to.
- Carry as little as possible. Small bag, phone, water, a light layer for later in the night.
- Wear shoes you can walk in and that you do not mind on wet steps.
- Keep your group together and agree on a meeting point before you enter the crowd.
- Follow police and volunteer instructions on the ghats. Crowd control on this night is serious and it is there for a reason.
- Keep your driver’s number saved and agree on a pickup point in advance. A local sightseeing cab booked for the full evening is easier than arranging transport twice.
- If you are travelling with elderly parents, plan the evening around the walking distance rather than the view.
Which Ghats Are Best For Watching Dev Diwali?
Varanasi has 84 ghats and all of them are lit. But they are not equally suited to visitors.
Dashashwamedh Ghat. The main Ganga Aarti happens here and the crowd is the heaviest in the city. The energy is unmatched. Come very early or you will not get a place.
Assi Ghat. Calmer than Dashashwamedh, with a wider open area. Good for first-time visitors and for families. Reaching it is also easier than the ghats deep inside the old city.
Chet Singh Ghat. Known for the light and projection display in recent years. Popular with photographers.
Rajendra Prasad Ghat. Next to Dashashwamedh, and often slightly less packed while still close to the main aarti.
Namo Ghat. Newer, with more open space and better access for vehicles. A reasonable choice if you want to avoid the deepest crowds.
If you are on a boat, you will pass several of these anyway. If you are staying on land, pick one ghat and stay there. Trying to move between ghats after dark on this night does not work.

How Can You Book A Dev Diwali Boat Ride In Varanasi?
The evening boat ride is the most sought-after way to see Dev Diwali, and it is the thing that sells out first.
You can book through a local travel operator, through a hotel, or directly with a boat owner at the ghat. Booking in advance with an operator is safer for this particular night, because on-the-spot rates rise sharply and availability is unpredictable.
There are two kinds of booking:
- Private boat. You take the whole boat for your group. You control the timing and the route within limits. Costs more.
- Shared seat. You pay per person and share the boat with others. Cheaper. You travel on the operator’s schedule.
Before you pay, confirm all of this in writing:
- Boat type and size
- Whether it is a private boat or a per-seat booking
- Boarding ghat and exact reporting time
- Departure time and how long the ride lasts
- Route and which ghats you will pass
- Passenger capacity and how many people will actually be on board
- What is included, such as seating, life jackets, refreshments or a guide
- Advance amount and the cancellation policy

Boats on the Ganga fall into a few broad categories. The right one depends on your group size, your budget and how much comfort you want.

Medium motor boat. The common choice for families. More stable, covers more of the riverfront in the same time, moderate cost.
Large motor boat or shared cruise. Higher capacity, sold by the seat as well as privately. Steadier and more comfortable. You share the space.
Bajra or premium decorated boat. Traditional larger vessels, often decorated for the festival. More space, better seating, higher price. Suited to bigger groups and to travellers who want a comfortable evening.
Viewing angle changes with boat size. A lower boat puts you closer to the reflection on the water. A larger boat gives you height and a wider view. Neither is better, they are just different evenings.

Where Do Dev Diwali Boat Rides Board From?
Boarding points are not the same for every operator. They depend on the boat category, on river conditions, and on the traffic and crowd arrangements the administration puts in place for the night.
Some services board from Gaay Ghat. Others use different ghats depending on where their boats are moored and where vehicle access is allowed that year.
So do not assume. Get three things in writing from your operator before the day:
- The exact boarding ghat
- Your reporting time
- A contact number for the person who will meet you there
Reach the boarding point early. Roads close, crowds thicken from late afternoon, and the last part of the journey is on foot. A trip that takes twenty minutes on a normal day can take well over an hour on this evening.

What Do The Fireworks And Light Displays Look Like?
Along with the lamps, the evening usually includes fireworks over the river at several points along the riverfront.
Seen from the water, the fireworks sit above the lit ghats, and you get the burst, the lamps and the reflection in one frame. Seen from the steps, you are closer to the sound and the crowd reaction, but your view is narrower.
In recent years there have also been light and projection displays at some ghats, along with laser shows organised as part of the public programme. These are not permanent fixtures. They change from year to year, and they depend on what the administration and UP Tourism arrange.
Treat any fireworks or show timing you read online as provisional until the official 2026 programme is announced. Check it a week or two before you travel.
What Shows And Activities Take Place During Dev Deepawali?
The modern festival has two layers.
The first is religious and constant. The morning dip, deepdaan, temple visits, the evening Ganga Aarti. These happen whether or not there is an official programme.
The second is organised. UP Tourism and the district administration coordinate public attractions on and around the festival. In past years this has included cultural performances, light and projection displays, and a public tribute at Dashashwamedh Ghat.
It helps to know which is which. Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh happens every evening of the year, not only on Dev Diwali. On the festival night it is larger and far more crowded, but it is not a special one-off event. A laser show or a scheduled performance, on the other hand, is festival-day programming and can be dropped or moved.
The full 2026 programme, with locations and timings, is normally published shortly before the date. Verify it then.
How Do You Reach The Ghats On Dev Diwali Night?
This is where most trips go wrong, so plan it properly.
Vehicle movement near the riverfront is restricted from the afternoon. Barricades go up. Your cab or auto will drop you at a point some distance from the ghat, and you walk the rest.
What this means in practice:
- Leave much earlier than you would on a normal day.
- Agree a drop point and a pickup point with your driver before you set out, and save his number.
- Do not plan to be picked up from the same place you were dropped. It may not be open later.
- Expect the return journey to take longer than the outbound one. Crowds leave the ghats all at once.
- If you have older travellers or small children with you, the walking distance is the thing to plan around, not the ticket price.
Arriving in the city on the day itself is possible but not ideal. If your train or flight lands on 24 November, keep the whole day free and do not schedule anything before the evening. Book your airport taxi service or railway station taxi in advance for that day, because finding one on arrival will be difficult.
How Much Does A Dev Diwali Evening Cost?
Costs on this night are higher than on a normal day. Plan for it.
Your main expenses are the boat, local transport, and accommodation. Boat rates for the festival evening are well above regular rates because demand is at its peak for a few hours. Hotels near the ghats also charge festival rates and often ask for minimum-night bookings.
Two ways to control the cost:
- Book early. Rates rise as the date gets closer and the cheaper options go first.
- Consider a shared seat instead of a private boat if your group is small.

How Many Days Should You Plan Around Dev Diwali?
One full day. Arrive the day before. On festival day, do the morning ghats and a temple visit, rest through the afternoon, and be at your boarding point or ghat by early evening. Leave the following morning.

Mistakes To Avoid On Dev Diwali
- Booking for Diwali instead of Kartik Purnima. The most common one. The dates are two weeks apart.
- Leaving the boat booking to the last week. By then you are choosing from what nobody else wanted.
- Arriving on the day of the festival. Too tight. Come a day early.
- Planning to move between ghats in the evening. Pick one and stay.
- Carrying a large bag. You will regret it in the crowd and on the steps.
- Skipping the morning. The pre-dawn ghats on Kartik Purnima are one of the best parts of the day and most visitors sleep through them.
- Paying a boat operator in full without written confirmation of the boarding point and time.
